1 Corinthians 5-8

Picture
1 Corinthians 8: 1-3
Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth.  And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know.  But if any man love God, the same is known of him.

My Take:
     Our mission from Jesus:
"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.  Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,  teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age." (Matthew 28: 18-20)  The first step is to be a disciple yourself, and to learn all that Jesus has taught.  The Bible is the instruction manual for becoming a disciple.  The second step is to make disciples by teaching others all that you have learned.  Having knowledge unto yourself will puffeth you up.  Teaching that knowledge edifieth others.
The purpose of this blog is to address this mission.  Read the Bible passage each day and then share your thoughts about whatever jumps out at you.  Ask questions or answer others questions, Teach or learn.  Post your comments throughout the day or read ahead and send me an email with your take of an upcoming reading. (for the schedule of the daily reading we follow the year plan on Christianity.com)

1 Corinthians 1-4

Picture
1 Corinthians 2: 1-5
And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God.  For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified.  And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling.  And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing  words of man's wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand  in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Paul traveled longer and further than any of the Apostles to spread the knowledge and the teachings of Jesus.  He was clear that his message was not his own but that of Jesus.  Paul said, "Follow me, for I follow Jesus".  Paul did not want divisions in the Church, and he certainly didn't want people to say that they were followers of Paul, or any man.

Romans 14-16

Picture
Romans 15: 2-6
Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.  For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.  For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.  Now the God of patience and consolation grant you to be likeminded one toward another according to Christ Jesus:  That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God gave us the Bible so that He might speak directly with us each individually.  We read the Bible and come to our own understanding, comforted by the fact that the Bible is the inerrant Word of God.  It is then our responsibility, and pleasure to share with our neighbor, as it is our neighbors responsibility and pleasure to share with us.  In order to share, one must come to a deeper level of their own understanding as they prepare their presentation.  Upon receiving testimony from another, you accept that which edifies what you already understood, and that which fills in gaps in your understanding.  You reject that which conflicts with your own understanding.  It is important to hear others, but just know that God's Word is inerrant, but man's is usually not inerrant.

Romans 11-13

Romans 12: 3-6

For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly,  according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.  For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office: So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.  Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith;

We are not all the same.  We each have different gifts and talents.  However, on the Path following Jesus, we all walk side by side.

Romans 8-10

Picture
Romans 9: 30-33
What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of faith.  But Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness, hath not attained to the law of righteousness.  Wherefore? Because they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. For they stumbled at that stumblingstone;  As it is written, Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.

We are saved by faith alone, not by works.  The pursuit of righteousness by the law goes awry when that pursuit becomes about our own accomplishments.  We need to follow Jesus in faith.  In the end, it is not about our accomplishments, but rather, the path that we followed.  Jesus is The Way, the only Way.

Romans 4-7

Picture
Romans 4: 13-14
For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.  For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:

We are saved by faith alone.  The sacrifice of Jesus was perfect, fulfilling the payment of all sins.  To believe that anything but faith is required would be to diminish what Jesus has achieved.  Jesus is The Way.  Only through Jesus, by following Him on the narrow path can we get to The Father.  May you find The Way.

Romans 1-3

Picture
Romans 1: 18
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.

Romans 2: 1-2
Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.
We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things.

The first step towards following Jesus is to remember that we fall way short of leading a righteous life on our own, and are fully deserving of the wrath of God.  Jesus came to save us and lead us, but John came first, because first we must repent.

Paul was shipwrecked on the island of Malta on his way to Rome.  Today, Malta still remembers Paul's stay here.  Even the places where his ship wrecked, and he swam ashore bear his name.  The photo above is St. Paul's Cathedral, and the photo below is the site of his landing.

Acts 24-26

Picture
Acts 26: 24-32
And as he thus spake for himself, Festus said with a loud voice, Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad.  But he said, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness.  For the king knoweth of these things, before whom also I speak freely: for I am persuaded that none of these things are hidden from him; for this thing was not done in a corner.  King Agrippa, believest thou the prophets? I know that thou believest.  Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.  And Paul said, I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me this day, were both almost, and altogether such as I am, except these bonds.  And when he had thus spoken, the king rose up, and the governor, and Bernice, and they that sat with them:  And when they were gone aside, they talked between themselves, saying, This man doeth nothing worthy of death or of bonds.  Then said Agrippa unto Festus, This man might have been set at liberty, if he had not appealed unto Caesar.

Paul goes before Agrippa to defend himself of accusations made by the Jews.  Paul not only lays out a defense, but is so bold as to try to convince Agrippa to become a Christian.
In which situations should we be more bold about sharing our faith?

Acts 21-23

Picture
Acts 22: 17-21
And it came to pass, that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the temple, I was in a trance;   And saw him saying unto me, Make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem: for they will not receive thy testimony concerning me.   And I said, Lord, they know that I imprisoned and beat in every synagogue them that believed on thee:   And when the blood of thy martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting unto his death, and kept the raiment of them that slew him.  And he said unto me, Depart: for I will send thee far hence unto the Gentiles.

Jesus called Paul to be a disciple and to take the message to the Gentiles.  God chose Paul, not because of his past, but because of his potential.  If God only called upon perfect people, or even people that had their lives together, He would have no one to call.  We are all called to be disciples.  What is there about you that makes you unqualified to follow Jesus?  Paul had persecuted andy even killed the followers of Jesus prior to his calling.
