Reading for Sunday September 29, 2019Zechariah 6: 12-13 And say to him, 'Thus says the Lord of hosts, "Behold, the man whose name is the Branch: for he shall branch out from his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord. It is he who shall build the temple of the Lord and shall bear royal honor, and shall sit and rule on his throne. And there shall be a priest on his throne, and the counsel of peace shall be between them both."' In Matthew 2:23 It says that the prophets had said that Jesus would be called a Nazarene. However, it never says this in the Old Testament. Rather, it never says this in the English translation of the Old Testament. The word Nazarene is a specific derivative of Nazareth which comes from the Hebrew root word "branch". Several times in the Old Testament, including Zechariah 12, it refers to the Messiah as "The Branch". And not only will this Branch be the Jewish Messiah, but from Isaiah and Romans, we know that this Branch is also the hope of the gentiles.
